about

This is my niche genre 'chill protest'.

The line ’and the band played through it all’ is a reference to a story my Dad told me about when he was in the resident band at the Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes. If they had a full house and there was an emergency, the band would be tipped off first, and they had been instructed to switch immediately to play an agreed song (I think it was Colonel Bogey) that the staff all knew was a signal to put their emergency plans in place (and start a safe evacuation) and reduce the likelihood of any harm.

lyrics

This thing we do is just reality testing
Our hopes and fears won’t protect us anymore
(and the band played through it all - oh oh)
If we can’t change it then we won’t be protesting
There’s something rotten in the state of who we are
(but the crowd wants something more - oh oh)

We should’ve stood up
We would’ve shouted
We could’ve let them know how strong we are

It’s not your tribe if you won’t try to defend it
But who’s to tell you who your friends and enemies are
(but they’ll curse you from afar - oh oh)
We take a glimpse through their Orwellian window
But what we’re seeing, it’s not where we both are
(but it still seems so bizarre - oh oh)

We should’ve stood up
We would’ve shouted
We could’ve let them know how strong we are

You gotta know there’s something wrong with our democracy
Do what we’re told so we can serve their ideology

This thing we do is just reality testing
Our hope and fears won’t protect us anymore
(and the band played through it all oh - oh)

We should’ve stood up
We would’ve shouted
We could’ve let them know how strong we are
You should’ve questioned
You would’ve voted
You could’ve changed, where we go now
